Program Requirements

Many of the Radiation therapist schools in Georgia often require finishing of general education undergraduate courses before applying for admission to a radiation therapy program. Some programs might also require achievement of entry healthcare courses such as medical terminology or health information technology. Since radiography and radiation therapy are closely correlated, many of the certification programs require students to hold prior degrees for Radiography and also valid accreditation from the American Registry of Radiological Technologists (ARRT). There are currently 5 programs available in Georgia, all 5 programs are both accredited and recognized by ARRT. Students will be able to take the ARRT board exam upon graduation.

Armstrong Atlantic State University offers an variety of options for individuals that are looking to enter the radiation therapy professions. Whether students have no degree, already have a degree in a different area, or want to upgrade their degree to bachelors and to become certified, Armstrong has it all.

The school is also one of the only school in the state that also offers distance learning options, but only students that are assigned to clinical sites in Charleston, South Carolina. Students will be rotated between 8 different clinical sites for the entire program.

Students must complete at least a minimum of 50 semester hours of CORE or General Education classes including human anatomy, college algebra, chemistry, and physics before applying by the January 15th deadline. For the life of the program, students must keep at least a 2.5 GPA to graduate.

Georgia Regent University’s 4 year bachelors degree in radiologic technology’s mission:

To provide educational experiences that produce competent radiation therapists capable of addressing the needs of the changing health care environment.

This is traditional program where students must first spend their first 2 years completing general education courses before applying for the major program. Core prerequisite courses are separated into 6 different categories: essential skills, institutional options, humanities and fine arts, science, and social sciences. Core classes may be satisfied through other colleges in the Georgia school system. Students that are transferring from schools outside of University of System of Georgia must choose from courses listed here, and also 2 references preferably from recent teacher(s) and/or employer(s).

Georgia Northwestern Technical College (GNTC) offers 2 programs for individuals looking to enter radiation therapy. A diploma program for Registered Radiologic Technologist (RTT) and an associates program for students that do not have any prior degrees. Both programs are available at the Floyd County Campus.

The program offered at Grady Health Systems has been teaching students about radiation therapy since 1974 and have since graduated more than 200 people. Grady offers a year long certificate program for interested radiographers that want to enter into a rad therapy career. In addition to meeting the RTT requirements, potential students must also complete classes from an accredited US institution in Algebra, precalc, English, medical terminology, IT, anatomy, medical imaging & processing, radiation physics, general physics, and research methodology.

Foreign students may also apply to this RT program, in addition to meeting above requirements, foreign individuals must also documentation of permanent resident status and official records from oversea institutions that were attended. If the applicant is not a native English speaker he/she must also score a 210 on the TOEFEL or pass the Georgia State Test of English Proficiency with a minimum of "Intermediate"

Cambridge Institute of Allied Health and Technology offers a couple options for students that want a career in Radiation Therapy. They offer a 24 month AS degree, 20 month certificate, and 16 month certificate program for individuals that are already certified as radiographers. The associates degree is available at there Delray Beach location, while the certificate programs are only available across the state line in Atlanta, Georgia. The programs are all certified by the JRCERT and students may sit on the national exam.
